Merrillville Fire Department Plans Memorial Day Events

The Merrillville Fire Department will continue its longstanding tradition of hosting a Memorial Day silent parade and services on Monday, May 27.
The silent parade starts 9 a.m. at the Merrillville History Museum 13 W. 73rd Ave. The Merrillville Fire Department Honor Guard will lead the procession down 73rd to the Veterans Memorial at 700 E. 73rd Ave., where officials will place a wreath.
“Anybody that wants to walk…just meet us at the town museum before 9 a.m., and we’ll all walk down 73rd and show our support for all the veterans,” Merrillville Fire Capt. Tommy Westbury said.
The Memorial Day program will then head to Merrillville Fire Station No. 71, 18 W. 73rd Ave., and the department will conduct a police and firefighter memorial service.
“We’ll read off all the names of all the police officers and firefighters who have passed away,” Westbury said.
The Fire Department will then provide a lunch of hamburgers and hotdogs and offer family activities.
The department’s new Exit Drills In The Home (EDITH) House will be open, and firefighters will provide a drone demonstration.
“We’ve got a few other cool things that are going to be coming out that same day,” Westbury said.
