Spring Cleanup

Pick Up Weeks:

  • April 15th through April 19th  - All Merrillville residents who live north of 73rd Avenue
  • April 22nd through April 26th - All Merrillville residents who live south of 73rd Avenue
The Street Department will start its Spring Cleanup Program on Monday, April 15th. Leaf collection will pass through the Town one time this season.  Leaf collectors will manage Merrillville residential leaves & yard waste (NO BRANCHES).  Because our leaf collectors are vacuum units, only loose leaves will be collected from the curbside or the edge of the street.

Leaf collection will begin on Monday April 15th, and run through Friday April 26th. There will be only one (1) pick up for everyone.

Before your scheduled collection week, place leaves in a narrow pile or row, in the grassy area between the sidewalk and the curb.  If your area is without curbs, place leaves within five (4) feet of the street.  PLEASE DO NOT RAKE LEAVES INTO THE STREET & AVOID RAKING LEAVES INTO DITCHES OR DRAINAGE SWALES.

Do not place leaves in cans or in plastic/paper bags & only loose leaves will be collected.  Keep parked vehicles off the street during your collection week.  We will not return to the piles that are passed over due to vehicle obstruction.

If your leaves are not collected immediately, please be patient!  We will maintain collection order all week despite inclement weather or unforeseen delays.

Leaves placed for collection should be free of waste oil, chemical contaminants, tree limbs, cans, rocks, bricks, garbage, or any other foreign objects and substances.

Collection will begin each day at 7:30 a.m.  Have your leaves ready on the Monday morning of your collection week.

Dumpster's will also be provided for use by Merrillville residents during this period ONLY.  The program days are April 15th through April 27th and hours for dumping will be Monday through Friday, from 7:15 a.m. to 2:45 p.m., and Saturday, from 8:00 a.m. to 12:00 p.m.

Dumpster's are located at the Public Works facility at 13 West 73rd Avenue.  All residents must present a driver’s license to the Street Department employee at the dumpster site before disposing unwanted items during the Weekday & Saturday hours.
