Fire Prevention and Education

The Merrillville Fire Department provides Fire Prevention and Educational programs free of charge. We use fire safety education materials for all children, pre-school age through 5th grade. Our department distributes over 2500 pieces of educationally sound, fire safety materials each year. The diversified materials we have selected for our use are designed to reach each child's age level of learning, created and designed by the National Fire Safety Council. We have found the materials to be enthusiastically received by teachers and children alike.

Our department distributes fire prevention materials at our area's pre-school, elementary schools, and we receive many invitations to appear at events of interest in our community.

We also utilize the E.D.I.T.H. (exit drills in the home) House, a travel trailer outfitted to teach children the safest ways to exit a house in case of fire.

We strongly believe that by making children aware, we can prevent tragic fire loss and even death. Every firefighter in our department is confident that fires and fire losses can be prevented if children and their parents can be properly educated in fire safety.
