ANDREAN HIGH SCHOOL & MERRILLVILLE SCHOOLS PARTICIPATED IN EARTH DAY RAIN BARREL COMPETITION ON APRIL 22, 2017
Students from Andrean High School and three Merrillville public schools participated in the Northwest Indiana Earth Day Celebration’s 2017 Rain Barrel Design Competition on April 22, 2017, at the Porter County Expo Center. Students from Andrean, Fieler Elementary School, Merrillville High School and the Merrillville Intermediate School participated in this public environmental art contest.
The event was hosted by the Porter County Recycling and Waste Reduction District, who received a grant from Bucher Construction to provide rain barrels to all schools participating in the contest. Merrillville Stormwater Utility is reimbursing any participating Merrillville school for paint and other materials needed for their rain barrel design projects. Thirty-two schools competed from Lake, Porter and LaPorte Counties.
Andrean High School won second place in the Middle/Intermediate/High School competition level and will receive a $50 classroom scholarship and a hand chair; Merrillville High School won third place and will receive a $50 classroom scholarship. Each guest entering the Earth Day Celebration received a ticket to cast a vote for their favorite barrel in the competition.
