The K-9 teams were created to assist police personnel to search for hidden suspects, locate articles or evidence of a crime, protect officers and the public from serious injury of death, assist in the arrest and apprehension of felons, and detect the presence of narcotics and/or explosives.

The dog breed of choice for the Merrillville Police K-9 Unit is the German Shepard and the Labrador Retriever. Both breeds are known for intense drive and physical endurance, making them an outstanding choice for police work.

Volker
Last August 12, 2005, Friday at approximately 10:15 am Merrillville Police Canine Volker, a nine year veteran,
succumbed to cancer and passed away. Volker and his handler Cpl. Joseph Gonzales have been responsible
for hundreds of apprehensions and arrests during his 9 year career. Volker Will be deeply missed by all of us here
at the Merrillville Police Department.
