What should I do if I smell gas or my Carbon Monoxide Detector alarm is sounding?
GET OUT of the house, do not open any doors or windows, go to a neighbor’s and
call 911. Wait for the firefighters.
Does the Ross Township Fire Service offer testing for fire extinguishers?
No. (Look in the yellow pages for the nearest fire extinguisher testing business.)
Does the Fire Service offer CPR classes?
No. (Contact the Methodist Hospital.)
Can I burn my leaves and/or yard waste?
No. Indiana State law prohibits any open burning.
Will the Fire Service check my child’s car seat for proper installation?
No. (The Merrillville Police Dept. provides that service. 769-3722)
Does the Fire Service perform fire inspections?
No. (The Town of Merrillville Fire Inspector can be reached at 769-4670.)
I own a business in Ross Township (Merrillville) will the Fire Service come to our location for safety training?

Can my class (Scout Troup, day care, etc.) tour the Fire Station?
Will the firefighters come to my class, etc. to teach Fire Safety?
Yes. The Ross Township Fire Service offers a variety of Fire Prevention programs and station tours for all ages. Please see the Fire Prevention & Education section for more specific details.
How can I qualify to be a Ross Township Volunteer Firefighter?
We are always accepting applications for volunteer firefighters. You must reside within Ross Township; you must be at least 18 years of age; you must have a valid Indiana Drivers license; you must be in good physical condition and pass a physical exam; you must be of good moral character; and never been convicted of a Felony or Class A Misdemeanor. Applications are available at the RTFS main office.
