On August 26, 2008, Merrillville Town Council President Ron Widing appointed Teresa Torres as chair of the newly formed Merrillville ADA Committee.

This volunteer committee will be made up of individuals who are interested in helping the town to comply with the Americans with Disabilities Act (ADA). The committee will identify and recommend resolutions to barriers to full participation in the local community faced by citizens with disabilities, and can work with citizens on any other disability-related matters which impact the town of Merrillville.

Committee members will have a working familiarity with the Americans with Disabilities Act (or be willing to acquire such knowledge), and should include a broad representation of different ages, disabilities and backgrounds.  At all times, the majority of members should be persons with disabilities. Family members, friends, service providers and other interested persons are also encouraged to participate, and every effort will be undertaken to ensure broad representation.

Anyone interested in serving on the committee will be asked to submit an application form to the President of the Committee, who will pass them on for consideration by the Merrillville Town Council, who will have appointing authority.

At the present time, no minimum or maximum numbers for voting membership have been identified, and no regular meeting schedule has been established.
